Professor Bronislaw Geremek MEP, a major figure in the contemporary history of his native Poland and of Europe, died 13 July, aged 76. "This is a sad day for the European Parliament" - its President Hans-Gert Pöttering said on learning of the news. Mr Geremek was a leading figure in the anti-Communist Solidarity movement and later served as Poland’s Foreign Minister. On Friday, 27 June 2008 in Brussels, the Energy Community Ministerial Council addressed key issues for the functioning of electricity markets in South-East Europe. At this occasion, Commissioner Piebalgs declared: "Last week the European Council reiterated its full support for the European perspective of the Western Balkans and the importance of regional cooperation: the Energy Community is becoming a success story in this respect, but efforts should be pursued." On the 12 of June 2008 in Kiev a round table on “European Integration of Ukraine: Role of Youth” was held. The aim of this round table was to elaborate specific ideas and ways that would help youth organizations in Ukraine to reinforce the process European integration in Ukraine. Former Polish President Kwaśniewski ends EBRD Annual Meeting with passionate plea for further European integration. No disrespect to the Ukraine’s corps diplomatique, but the country’s arguably best ambassador is a foreigner: The former President of Poland, Aleksander Kwaśniewski, ended the EBRD Annual Meeting 2008 in Kiev with a passionate plea for the full integration of Ukraine into European structures. The EBRD today agreed to a donation of €135 million to support international efforts to clean up the site of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, the scene in 1986 of the world’s worst civilian nuclear power disaster. The EBRD contribution is a further step in the efforts by the international community to make the Chernobyl site safe. [more]

The EBRD will hold its Annual Meeting in Kiev on 18-19 May, returning to the Ukrainian capital 10 years after it last staged a meeting there in 1998. Discussions during the two-day session will focus on the progress in the whole EBRD region over the last decade, and especially in Ukraine which in that period has experienced a peaceful political revolution that led to democracy.
