Key investment projects in the European Neighbourhood get a €85 million boost

On July 2nd, the European Commission has decided to grant an additional €85 million to the Neighbourhood Investment Facility (NIF) for 2010. This will allow neighbouring partner countries to leverage increased funding for major investment projects in key areas such as energy, transport and environment, as well as in the social sector (for projects such as construction of schools and hospitals). Private sector development will also be encouraged, targeting especially Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). [more]

UKRAINIAN PUPIL WINS TOP PRIZE IN DRAWING COMPETITION ORGANISED BY THE EUROPEAN UNION


The European Union announced today the results of its annual International Drawing Competition on gender equality with a Ukrainian pupil, Olga Chumachenko, winning one of the top prizes in the contest. Olga, a nine-year old pupil from Khakhovka, was one of 14 winners of the competition which was launched this year on International Women’s Day, 8th March. In total, around 50,000 children from 61 countries submitted drawings in line with the competition topic “Once upon a time, there was a girl and a boy, together they wanted to make a better world…”. Participation from Ukraine was particularly impressive, with over 2,500 Ukrainian children taking part in the competition. [more]

Spain ends invisible EU presidency (Andrew Rettman)

Spain’s EU presidency will be remembered for its “messy” foreign policy and the invisibility of Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Zapatero. It began with a hacker putting the face of a TV character, Mr Bean, a comic bumbler who bears a passing resemblance to the Spanish leader, on the Spanish presidency website at the moment of its launch in January. “Ukrainian mass media working abroad needs state support” – such was an appeal of Diaspora to Ukrainian authorities

To provide state financial support for the Ukrainian printed and internet mass media working abroad for 2009 – such was an appeal of the participants of the Days of Diaspora of Ukraine to the President of Ukraine, Prime-Minister and the Head of the Budget Committee of Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine. Support of abroad Ukrainian mass media should become one of the first steps in changing state policy of Ukraine regarding Ukrainians who are living abroad. This idea was initiated by European Association of Ukrainians.

Ukraine has to change its attitude towards Ukrainians living abroad

Contemporary state policy of Ukraine regarding Ukrainians living abroad is insufficiently effective and needs radical overview aiming to stipulate its activation and reinforcement of the role of Ukraine in the world. This statement was declared by the President of European Association of Ukrainians Oleksiy Tolkachov on the occasion of opening of the Days of Diaspora in Ukraine which were held in Kiev 20-30 of November 2008. Millions of Ukrainians live abroad and annually this number is growing. Ukrainian Diaspora is one of the biggest foreign investors into Ukrainian economy, bearers of the unique experience, knowledge and opportunities. Ukrainians living abroad significantly influence the formation of international image of Ukraine.

Union for the Mediterranean: Ministers endorse its working modalities and priorities for 2009

On the 3rd and 4th of November Foreign Ministers from all 43 states of the Euro-Mediterranean partnership meet in Marseille to endorse plans for the mandate, structure and institutional governance of the Barcelona Process: Union for the Mediterranean, an initiative launched at the Paris Summit of 13th July.  [more]

Celebration of Independence Day of Ukraine in Brussels 24 of August, 2008

On the 23-24 of August, 2008 a solemn celebration dedicated to the Independence Day of Ukraine was held in the capital of European Union. Celebration in Brussels was not held for the first time, it was started last year by European Association of Ukrainians and has already became a good tradition and manifestation of European integration of Ukraine. This year celebration was organized by European Association of Ukrainians mutually with Youth League of Ukraine “Youth Power”, and with support of the Community of football fans “For! Beautiful Football” and Ukrainian International Airlines of Ukraine.

EBRD contributes €135 million to international Chernobyl support efforts

The EBRD today agreed to a donation of €135 million to support international efforts to clean up the site of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, the scene in 1986 of the world’s worst civilian nuclear power disaster. The EBRD contribution is a further step in the efforts by the international community to make the Chernobyl site safe.  [more]
